Pass your exams. Slay a monster. Make it home for dinner.

In retrospect, life was so simple before you got superpowers. Do your homework, pass your classes, go to practice four times a week, ask your crush to prom. Well, prom can wait. Gotta buy gasoline for the homemade flamethrower. This Monster isn’t going to stop itself.

Welcome to the life of an Emergent. You aren’t a hero, you’re just a kid who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. You’ve got superpowers, but only technically—at this point its barely a party trick, nothing to name a comic book character after. And its hardly a consolation when you look at the Monsters you’re facing.

These things shrug off bullets without flinching, can snap bones like toothpicks, and can warp the very laws of physics you used to think were unmoveable. Did I mention they can mutate to take advantage of your fears? You have no chance of winning a fair fight…

So don’t fight fair.

If you want to win, you’re going to need to hunt this Monster. Study the sites of its attacks. Observe it in action. Raid its lair. Study what it leaves behind. Find its weaknesses, then exploit them. Craft some weapons, lay some traps, use your powers. Turn the tide, and take this thing out once and for all. Don’t fight fair.

In Emergent, you’ll play as highschool students with superpowers who fight horrifying, interdimensional Monsters while trying to maintain their secret identities and pass their classes.

  • Choose from 24 unique, highly detailed, reality-bending powers, each with a wealth of combat and non-combat abilities you can use to creatively solve any problem.
  • Engage with deep character creation mechanics including your fears, stress responses, and responsibilities, all of which meaningfully contribute to how you face challenges.
  • Juggle your busy school and extracurricular schedule while you face off against the interdimensional threat.
  • Solve the mystery of your Monster’s weaknesses while you protect civilians from its attacks.
  • Delve into a streamlined, modular crafting system to fashion the perfect weapon or trap to exploit the weaknesses you uncover.
  • Finally, engage in high-speed, variable-initiative combat to face the Monster down.

Every time I close my eyes I see an endless sea of nightmarish futures that manage to manifest despite my best efforts. I am blamed for things that never happen, my future-proofed plans ignored.

I blink and feel the dismal pain of our fated doom as I tap into the third eye of my future self. Does he feel his own consciousness overwritten by his past self as I play the part of a puppeteer? Do my destined friends see the lights in my eyes fade and reignite, an omen of the end of their existence?

These questions haunt me to my very core, but I have to press on and not dwell. The irony of spending infinite time in infinite futures but not having enough time in the present is not lost on me.

I write this while sitting in my own pocket dimension, surrounded by writhing metal and radioactive flowers of bone, flanked by a dislodged metal door that serves as a monument of mockery at our attempts at subterfuge. Heaps of failure mar the singular, dimly lit room. A prison of my own making.

But in spite of it all, we face our demons together in order to survive. All we have left is each other.

We tried to form an alliance with the Midnight Man. 10/10 our lives have irreversibly changed for the worse and Dee Guy stole a door. Would split the timeline again.

I have loved playing this game! The powers are so cool, and it's a wave of nostalgia to get to brave the hazards of high school without having to deal with the actual horrors and consequences in real life anymore. It's so much fun!

The powers are so unique and powerful, I feel like every type of character you can run will feel so super distinct from everyone has at the table, which is huge for me!

I first found Emergent while in college with the brilliant creators Austin and Daniel. I had just been bit by the D&D bug and was a fairly fresh ttrpg player but had a little experience under my belt and was beginning to be disenchanted with the Wizards of the Coast for reasons that need not be mentioned here. Over lunch one day, I was introduced to the game and sent a copy, which I promptly devoured and found an immediate love for. I knew immediately that this game tapped into something special and powerful: teenage power-fantasy. Everyone has held up an empty hand imagining a gout of fire or bolt of electricity flying forth to kill some hated foe (whether they'll admit it or not). Throughout the campaign, I was able to relate to my fellow players and peers not just as a powerful person but as a teenager and human being who was just as brave in the face of danger as the rest of them. I then bounced immediately out of that game into one of my own, loosely based on the Beta 1. Writing and running this game helped me fight some of my demons and grow as a human being. Some could argue that any ttrpg could do that, but Emergent let me do it with a character I'd designed to mimic myself in ways that other fantasy couldn't. Emergent got me through some of the toughest years of my life by channeling deep pain into a creative and integrated experience. The friends and progress I've made as a direct result of this game have made me into who I am, and I'd be worse of had I not found Emergent when I had. Emergent may not change your life the way it has mine, but it just might change the way you see ttrpgs and maybe even yourself.

Emergent has become one of my favourite TTRPG systems.

Collaborative combat, character customization  in every way that you can think, and such excellent vibes that are baked right into the rules.
It has become one of my favourite games to Live stream and play at the kitchen table with friends. Its not often I find role play systems that account for everyday normal person problems like stress, and the struggles of being a high school student all while trying to save the world from its own worst nightmares.

Choose a power, study your monster, craft your weapon, and get ready for the fight of your life.

10/10, can't wait to get more time with this system.

Emergent rules!!

Combat is collaborative and engaging and I love being able to craft or "invent" my own weapons and armor. I also really love the mystery element to it: you have to learn about the monster by interacting with the town and the places it's been.  Every power I've played has been an absolute blast; my only complaint is that it's hard to choose just one!  So fun to roleplay with friends and then fight a monster and/or a government agency :)

15/10 Can't wait to play again :)

Beta-tester here—this game is SO much fun. There are SO many powers, so many unique mechanics, and the world and theming is so unique and fun. I've had a blast playing this; it's absolutely perfect for anyone who loves the high school feel of the horror & comedy in Stranger Things, and the powers are so varied and unique that they scratch just about every itch you could have for the strange and supernatural. 10/10—and the rulebook is SO well-designed. Would highly recommend you pick this up!!!

I've had the privilege of getting to help playtest this game, and I can't say enough good things about it. It's an amazing game, the art and graphic design are beautiful, and it's so much fun to play. With all of the different powers and ways to make monsters, there are so many different ways to play and unique stories to tell. If I had to list my top favorite things about the game they would be (in no particular order):

The game is incredibly detailed, with so many fun optional mechanics. Want to include magic in your game? There's rules for that. Want to include an evil government organization? There's rules for that (and stats for government agents too!) Want to just play a simple game of superpowers? You can do that too!

Once you get the hang of combat, it moves so smoothly! There's no initiative, so you can work with your team to decide how to best act together.

The powers are so unique, and I've loved every one I've played (Thermal remains my favorite- control over fire and ice!)

I could go on, but I think I'll just let you read for yourself and discover all of the amazing things about EMERGENT!!
